Tion's Story:

Tion is a smart, outgoing nine-year-old boy who someday wants to be a basketball player.  Two years ago, Tion was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma called Burkitt Lymphoma that requires a highly specialized treatment protocol.

Unfortunately, Tion’s disease was initially difficult to diagnose and when he began treatment he experienced severe side effects.  These side effects included frequent high fevers that could last for extended periods of time and, as a result, left him medically fragile.  He was hospitalized over his nine month protocol, but much more frequently in the beginning and was able to return home in between treatments.

Tion lives with his mother and two siblings.  Unfortunately his family suffered another tragedy when Tion’s father passed away while Tion was hospitalized.  His mother had stopped working when Tion became ill and after his father’s death, the family had no income at all.   Even with monies from government entitlement programs, his mother was still only able to cover half of the family’s household bills.   Friends of Karen came to the rescue to help Tion’s family pay their utilities and mortgage so they could remain in their home.  Social worker, Jessica Dunn, also provided emotional support to Tion and his mother, who now found herself as a brand new head of the household.

Back to School

The great news is that Tion is in remission and off treatment. He is back at school full time and excelling.  His mother was able to return to work over the summer.  Tion has medical check ups every three months and so far he is doing very well.  Good luck Tion – we’re pulling for you!

How You Can Help Unfortunately Tion’s story is not unique. There are many other critically ill children and their families that urgently need support from Friends of Karen. With your donation we can provide financial assistance for basic living expenses as well as guidance for families coping with their child’s cancer.
