For a fun and exciting way to get some exercise while raising funds for children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, put on your sneakers and join the Walk/Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon on Saturday and Sunday, May 1 & 2, 2010 at Eisenhower Park.

Friends of Karen, an organization that has helped thousands of families with children diagnosed with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses for 32 years, is organizing their team and encourages families to join them for this celebrated event in the heart of Nassau County’s Museum Row. Proceeds from the Run will help Friends of Karen in their continuing efforts to provide emotional, financial and advocacy support to their very special families.

For information and an application on the Walk/Run, please call 631.473.1768, ext. 303. For more information on Friends of Karen's services, visit www.friendsofkaren.org.

Friends of Karen began in 1978 when family friends came to the aid of a couple and their 16-year-old daughter, Karen, who was terminally ill. A fund-raising campaign for medical and other costs enabled Karen to spend her precious last days at home surrounded by loving family and friends. More than 32 years later, Friends of Karen has expanded to a tri-state children's charity that serves children from birth to 21 who are diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. Last year, 1,285 children benefitted from services of Friends of Karen.

Friends of Karen provides direct financial assistance with medical and illness-related expenses such as transportation for medical treatment, childcare for siblings while parents are with their hospitalized child, household expenses and rent or mortgage payments, bereavement support, as well as living expenses for parents in out-of-state hospitals, telephone, television services and parking.
